Abstract:This paper argues that higher education in Sierra Leone needs to place greater emphasis on human resources development in terms of motivation for the country's advancement. Awareness and use of African cultural values is necessary as a basis for development. Areas in higher education where cultural values are being considered are examined, particularly the Bunumbu Project, a primary teacher training programme implemented in 1974 but effectively in operation in 1978; the Cultural Studies Programme of the Institute of African Studies, University of Sierra Leone; and the diploma course in Adult Education of the Institute of Adult Education and Extramural Studies, University of Sierra Leone. The author stresses the need for research and the dissemination of information relevant to the African culture and environment. Bibliogr.
