| Abstract: | Education has been playing an important role in Liberia for a long time. As a commonwealth in 1839, the country passed a compulsory school attendance law. Education has made enormous contributions to personal advancement and national development, but it is not as effective as it should be, because it is eluded by three crucial elements of quality education. To be more effective, education in Liberia should: 1) critically analyse the country's history, since the past is important for the present; 2) reflect the people's culture, and notably include local languages in the curriculum; and 3) consider carefully the cultural and socioeconomic needs of the country and, accordingly, develop human resources to meet those needs.
