| Abstract: | The nineteenth-century popular image of Téwodros, emperor of Ethiopia from 1885-1868, is reflected in five basic types of engravings produced by European artists at the time: 1) full face, head and shoulder portraits; 2) standing poses, mostly in profile, in some instances addressing peasants, threatening foreign enemies, surveying the countryside, or road building; 3) seated regally, full face, surrounded by lions; 4) heroically committing suicide; and 5) discovered dead by the British or later lying in repose on his bier.
