Abstract:This paper analyses schemes of regional cooperation in higher education in Southern Africa. It looks at the rationale for regional cooperation in higher education, and focuses on concrete projects of cooperation in which the countries of the region are engaged. It also identifies problems and constraints which have been encountered in the region and attempts to provide viable solutions. The basic thesis of the paper is that cooperation in higher education is vital and can provide solutions to the many educational problems which are the concern of most countries in the region. It argues that, while numerous proposals for cooperation have been forwarded both on a regional and continental level, the evidence of the region's ability to implement cooperation is still thin.
