Abstract:An ecological study of wildlife browsing and grazing pressure on the vegetation resources of Yankari, Nigeria's premier game reserve in Bauchi State, was made. Browsing and grazing pressure was found to be quite extensive as well as intensive consequent upon a significant increase in the wildlife population of the reserve in recent years. Vegetation regeneration was found to be extremely poor and elephants' devastating browsing pressure on Adansonia digitata, the 'giant-king' tree of the Nigerian savanna biome, was pushing the species to the threshold of extinction. The implications of all these effects for ecological conservation work in the game reserve are discussed. Bibliogr.
