Abstract: | This study analyses the evolution of racial economic differences in Kenya between 1914 and 1976. It shows that the Africans' share of national income was squeezed to under 50 percent in 1950, but that it then increased again, particularly with the coming of independence in 1963. In 1976 it was close to 80 percent. The racial per capita income gap is still large. In 1976 the ratio of African to non-African income levels was 1:30. A decomposition of growth shows that the growth of Asian and African incomes has dominated in recent decades. Decomposition of inequality shows that the share of overall inequality due to inequality between the races peaked in 1936 and then gradually fell. This was mainly due to the rapid increase in inequality among Africans, which reflects the reduction of racial discrimination towards Africans. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
