Abstract:The ethnic groups of northeastern Nigeria have rich oral traditions which express their historical experiences in songs, of which several examples are provided (in English translation). Whether oppressed as the Yungur and the Karai-karai, resisting conquest as the Kuteb, or themselves the conqueror as the Marghi, poetry in the form of songs and epics has the common function of unifying each group, serving to maintain internal cohesion, structural stability, and patriotism.
