Abstract:Whether it is called bride price, dowry, bridewealth, marriage consideration, or dower, the payment that emanates from the bridegroom to the bride's family on account of customary law marriage still forms an integral part of customary law marriage contracts in Nigeria. This article examines the legal nature of bride price in Nigeria in general, and in the northeastern parts of the country in particular, looking at the nature of bride price, the mode of payment, the possibility of a statutory limitation on bride price, bride price and the right to the custody of children, and the refund of bride price.
