Abstract:Brief survey of the history of Islam in South Africa's Western Cape from the arrival, in 1657, of Muslim slaves from Indonesia up to the present time. This is followed by a discussion of the recent resurgence of Islamic dynamism in the area, which is attributed, amongst other things, to the similarities between several aspects of Islamic and African culture.
