Abstract: | Using estimates of the magnitude of internal road freight traffic in Nigeria derived from the latest available commodity survey data (1974), the author describes the spatial pattern and structure of the freight flows between important intercity pairs. Those factors deemed relevant to the basic geography and socioeconomic systems of Nigeria are formalized within two forms of multiple regression models in order to explore, in quantitative terms, the fundamental factors influencing the structure and processes of the intercity freight flows in the country. The models achieved moderate successes in terms of the amount of explained variance in the magnitude of freight generation and attraction between the interaction centres, generally performing better for the aggregate commodity group than for the disaggregate groups and for the freight inflows than outflows. Some of the findings cast doubt on the appropriateness of the direct use of multistage aggregate transport models for predicting the magnitude and distribution of interzonal commodity flows in the evolving economies of developing countries such as Nigeria.
