Abstract:The author uses imagery from two consecutive Landsat scenes of 19 November 1978 in order to evaluate the potential of a satellite-based methodology for estimating cropland area in a savanna environment in Nigeria. Two study areas within the Kano region - Kano River and Kazaure - were chosen to represent different agroecological conditions. The study suggests that for an intensively cultivated savanna region, 73 percent of the upland cropland can be automatically identified. Bibliogr.
