Abstract: | The objectives of the study are to examine the concept of theatre censorship as it is understood and practised on the African continent; and to show to what extent such censorship affects the creative efforts of theatre practitioners. Most of the studies on this subject trace the existence of such censorship back to colonial days or postindependence concerns with the people's cultural and political development. However, a look at traditional society - particularly its theatre practice - shows that censorship exists even at village and preliterate levels. Using actual experiences and accounts of censorship processes from Malawi and Sierra Leone, the author describes theatrical performance and censorship in traditional society, as well as modern censorship, and he presents examples of theatre censorship today.
