Abstract:The flow of agricultural food products from rural areas to urban centres in Nigeria is beset with a number of formidable transportation problems, as exemplified by the case of Owerri-Umland region, Imo State. The problems include the dominant use of relatively inefficient means of transportation (head porterage, bicycle) in preference to more efficient media (motor vehicle), the nonavailability of the more efficient media at certain important locations, and the poor condition of the roads. The forms and complexity of transportation modes, and the origin of constraints in the rural-urban flow of agricultural products, underscores the need for an integrated approach to urban and rural development planning.
