Abstract:Examination of the basic spatial characteristics of urban freight movement in Lagos, Nigeria, under three major subheadings: types of freight, intermodal split in freight movement, and zonal distribution. Of the four major categories of freight that can be distinguished - metro-export, metro-import, intrametropolitan, and metro-transit - only the first three are relevant in the case of Lagos. Of these three, the intrametropolitan freight constitutes the bulk of freight handled in Lagos. In terms of commodity composition of freight, food and live animals predominate, closely followed by manufactured goods. With respect to modal split in freight movement, road vehicles are the most important. With respect to zonal distribution, there is a marked variability in the freight-attracting force of the different traffic zones in the metropolis. The study calls for comprehensive urban transportation planning in order to minimize congestion problems and ensure an effective functioning of the various zones in the metropolis. Bibliogr., note.
