Abstract: | In Zimbabwe, under the conditions stipulated in the Termination of Pregnancy Act no. 29 of 1977, abortion is permissible only to the extent that it is necessary to save the life of the pregnant woman or, to preserve her health, for medical and humanitarian reasons, or where the pregnancy has resulted from rape, or where there is a likelihood that the foetus has been impaired. Little is known about the extent of illegal abortions, the ensuing health hazards and complications necessitating medical treatment, and the financial burden which illegal abortions impose on the health services as a result. In the urban areas of Zimbabwe, the demand for illegal abortions is likely to increase. The authors argue in favour of legalizing abortion, submitting that under present social and material conditions, abortion should pass from the realm of criminal law to that of social welfare, health and fertility control.
