Abstract: | Sugar is one of Africa's major agricultural exports. Like the prices of Africa's other primary commodities, sugar prices have tended to fluctuate violently on the world market. This paper analyses the factors behind the steady decline in sugar prices on the world market, particularly in recent years, and how this affects African economies dependent on sugar as their main export product. First, the origins and growth of sugarcane production in Africa are examined. Second, the question of sugar's contribution to Africa's agricultural underdevelopment is analysed. Then the paper examines Africa's terms of trade in general. Finally, it dwells specifically on recent trends in world sugar prices. App. (sugar exports by country, 1981, 1983), bibliogr. |
