| Abstract: | This chapter reviews the well-documented processes which resulted in the establishment of farming systems based on cotton and millet in eastern, central and northern Uganda and looks at the potential of these systems to absorb profitably additional farm machinery innovations. One purpose in reviewing past experience is to attempt to identify the reasons why, despite very considerable research and development activity, technological innovation in cotton-millet farming systems lost its dynamic features about 1930 and never regained them.
