Abstract: | This paper examines the history of Frelimo's shift from a conscious identification of itself, when it was founded, as a broadly based nationalist movement to its self-identification as a Marxist-Leninist vanguard party after the independence of Mozambique in 1975. The investigation is prompted by the question of whether or not Marxism is simply an intellectual trapping, added at one time to attract Eastern Bloc support but as easily dropped at another to attract Western assistance. The essence of Frelimo's own account of its ideological history is the assertion that the adoption of Marxism is an internal development, a result of Frelimo's own process of learning. An analysis of Frelimo's own documents, from its inception in 1962 until 1977, suggests that Frelimo's interpretation does seem broadly justified. Notes, ref. (p. 364-368). |
