Subject:horticulture
Abstract:Based on a two-week visit in December 1983 and a questionnaire survey carried out in March 1984, the authors trace the evolution of horticulture in Wadi Kutum, in the Darfur Region of Sudan: the setting, the land tenure system, the evolution of irrigated gardening, the organization of production, marketing mechanisms and income generated. Despite its present inadequacy in providing a livelihood for farmers and their families, horticulture remains the backbone of the subsistence economy in Wadi Kutum. Had it not been for horticultural activities, the rapidly deteriorating local living conditions would have deteriorated even further. Recommendations to help improve the situation in Wadi Kutum conclude the article. Bibliogr., notes.
