| Abstract: | Africa is a traditional sorghum-millet area but maize has encroached over the last 50-70 years and the process is still taking place. In Zimbabwe, research on maize improvement is well established and has a long history; by contrast, sorghum research has been more limited, with production coming from traditional varieties or imported hybrids. Today this picture is changing: scientists of Zimbabwe's Department of Agricultural Research and Specialist Services are developing and evaluating hybrids for farmer use. This paper discusses priorities for sorghum improvement in the SADCC region, the development of varieties, the need to identify market opportunities that might absorb surpluses, and traditional and new uses of sorghum.
