| Abstract: | A review of the state of Angola's political economy, the living and working conditions of the majority of its population, agricultural production, industrial production, and Angola's involvement in the world market on the eve of independence (1975), is followed by an analysis of the economic crisis that developed after independence. Attention is paid to South Africa's undeclared war, shortages of essential commodities, food imports, the collapse of industrial production, dependence on oil and diamond revenues, and the crisis plan adopted in 1983. A final section assesses the important political changes that have occurred since the founding of the People's Republic in November 1975, and analyses the obstacles that lie in the path of building socialism in Angola. A postscript discusses the economy and the war situation in 1984-1985. App. (war damages 1976-1981), notes, ref. |
