| Abstract: | Women contribute significantly to agriculture in Mali. They provide a substantial part of the labour used for the production of both cash and food crops, and they play an important role in the care of animals and poultry. The general situation of women in the agricultural sector in Mali is the same as that of men: lack of water and sufficient resources to compensate is the single most severe problem. However, a far larger proportion of rural women than men are illiterate. In addition, far fewer women have had the experience of going to a town for a short-term job with all the training and orientation which that implies. Despite the lack of resources and the seriousness of the agricultural problems, the Malian government has managed to develop programmes specifically for women. But the majority of rural women are largely untouched by the efforts which have been begun for their benefit. Notes. |
