Abstract: | Brief description of the work of the women's functional literacy programme in Mali, begun in 1976, which uses literacy training to promote broad improvement programmes in the areas of family care, agriculture, animal husbandry, handicrafts, trade, and income-generating projects. The initial neglect of women in functional literacy programmes was thus corrected in part, and although still fewer women are trained than men, in 1983 in three of the seven regions 3,000 women were participating in the programme.
