| Abstract: | This article argues that one of the best ways to make new technologies available to Sahelian women is to use (or develop) those which closely relate to traditional technologies but, perhaps, slightly improve them. New technologies, although simple, have been promoted by government agencies after testing outside the locality in which they will be used, indeed even outside the country. This means that there are often problems of adaptation and unforeseen obstacles to widespread adoption of the new way of doing things. Some problems in the improved stove programme in Burkina Faso, with which the author was associated, are discussed. |
