Abstract: | The aim of this book is to provide insight into the life of women in Muslim societies and into the way in which the policy theme of Women and Development conceived by the Dutch Minister for Development Cooperation is taking shape in Islamic societies. The first part of the book is the text of the Memorandum on 'Women, Islam and Development', presented to the Netherlands Parliament in May 1993. Four key topics are dealt with in the Memorandum: access to and participation in economic resources; control of women over their own bodies; formal and informal networks, organizations and politics; and access to sociocultural resources. In addressing these issues, three levels are distinguished: the regulatory level, norms and laws; practical usage: day-to-day practice in the various societies; and development cooperation in action. The Memorandum includes country case studies from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Senegal, Sudan and Yemen, and an analysis of the situation of Muslim immigrant women in The Netherlands. In September 1993, the Memorandum and its policy conclusions were discussed during an international seminar in The Hague. Part 2 of this publication is a selection of speeches presented at the seminar (by Riffat Hassan, Amatalrauf al-Sharki and Jan Pronk) and a summary of the discussions. |
