Abstract: | The indigenous coastal people of Transkei, South Africa, supplement their diet with shellfish. Information on the pattern of exploitation, species preferences, consumption of shellfish relative to other high-quality proteins, and the perceptions of the exploiters about the availability of these resources were obtained from two questionnaire surveys conducted in the Nqabara area during August 1990 and in the Mazeppa area during August 1991. In contrast with the claims of ecologists that unconstrained exploitation of shellfish has resulted in degradation of intertidal resources, respondents did not perceive such resources to be in short supply. Such conflicting opinions and the negative influence which regulation of shellfish-gathering may have on the nutritional health of the people, have far-reaching implications for the successful implementation of various proposed management strategies.
