| Abstract: | This chapter deals with the Wolof of Senegal and discusses the introduction of cashcropping and its consequences, projects of agricultural modernization, State marketing and village cooperatives, the increase in household expenses, and implications for agricultural development projects. The author refutes the notion that women do not profit from cash crops or have any benefit from the introduction of modern tools, but he also shows unconsidered side effects from mechanization programmes and other 'modern' changes in terms of women's work, their general obligations and their status. The gist of the argument is the need for more knowledge of local farming systems before projects of agricultural development are assigned and implemented. Notes. |
