Abstract: | The structure of the Nigerian film industry has developed in three stages: the primary stage of the colonial or preindependence period, the reconstruction of the film industry after independence in 1960, and the development after the Indigenization Decree of 1972, when a transition from foreign to indigenous ownership took place. It is shown that there is a strong correspondence between the structure of the industry and the types of films produced, and that the Nigerian film industry has progressed to a second phase of development, but has not yet reached maturity.
