Abstract: | This study examines debt and structural adjustment in Tanzania. It discusses the situation before the introduction of structural adjustment programmes (SAP) (1961-1978); the problems the country went through in the late 1970s and early 1980s; the origin of the economic crisis and growing indebtedness; the introduction of different SAPs in the period 1980-1991, with special attention for the impact of ERP 1 (Economic Recovery Programme Phase 1), adopted in 1986, on the various sectors of the Tanzanian economy and on the country's debt position; the way out of the crisis. |
