Abstract: | A review of the diagnosis of the African crisis is an important bond in the process of transformation. The present discussion paper, commissioned by the Division for Regional Programmes and Policy Analysis of UNDP's Regional Bureau for Africa for presentation to the third UNDP/RBA Economists Seminar, questions the very description of the state of affairs in Africa. The first part summarizes and comments on perceptions of today's Africa. The second part gives the author's characterization of the economic situation. The third part presents the need for a continental agenda. The fourth part outlines the features that should be the cornerstones of a realistic African development model. There is need for an integrated approach to development. Moreover, development will be attained when Africans realize they are the ones going to achieve it. Another bond is to recognize that the neoclassical monetary policies have not proven adequate to the African needs. |
