Abstract: | The literature on tropical forest management and development can be broadly subdivided into several categories. The majority of the research falls into the realm of the natural sciences. A second body of literature focuses on the legal and administrative aspects of rain forest problems. Another line of social science inquiry examines the underlying causes of rain forest destruction, usually within a demographic, political-economy or so-called 'political ecology' framework. A final area of interest among social scientists is the issue of environmental conflict. The present bibliography brings together over 300 titles in predominantly English and French texts covering tropical forest issues in West and Central Africa. It includes works from the traditional conservation and preservation orientation characteristic of the natural sciences, in addition to the growing number of works which adopt a socioeconomic or a political perspective. Some of the key studies on global rain forest issues as well as general research on rain forest ecology are also presented. The titles are arranged alphabetically and cover the period from 1973 to 1993. |
