Abstract: | This work provides an extensive selection of cases from one of the most important tribunals in northern Nigeria, the Emir of Kano's judicial council, at a crucial time, in 1913-1914. The original records, which are also reproduced in this volume, are in Arabic, with an admixture of terms in Hausa. Five chapters portray disputes over real property - land and houses. The crucial theme here is the power of the emir to control access to property. Four chapters cover slavery, the theft of goods and money, and death and injury cases. Two chapters cover the sale and theft of livestock. Each of the chapters is prefaced by an introduction explaining the principal legal issues and their social, political, and economic contexts. |
