Abstract: | Nigeria has chosen primary health care (PHC) as the strategy for the achievement of health for all. The multisectoral approach to planning the PHC strategy is of great value for health development and has created a lot of significant changes in the concept of health care delivery in Nigeria. A National Health Policy and Strategy (NHPS) to achieve health for all by the year 2000 has been formulated. The present paper looks at past planning efforts in the field of health care in Nigeria, signalling out a number of constraints, such as the lack of medical and technical manpower and facilities, and the lack of funding for health programmes such as immunization, diarrhoea control, family planning and the combatting of childhood communicable diseases. In conclusion, it presents a methodological construct for perspective planning of the health care delivery system in Nigeria. Bibliogr. |
