| Abstract: | Various Nigerian governments have been aware of the widening gap between supply and demand of foods and nutrients, as epitomized in such campaigns as Operation Feed the Nation, the Green Revolution, and the Food for All Programme. However, no national government has ever estimated in quantitative terms what the national food requirements would be in any particular year. The present paper presents a methodological procedure for computing the raw food requirements for Nigeria in a perspective plan period. It is a multistage computational approach which first computes the nutritional requirements of an individual, then converts this into raw food needs, and finally uses this information to project the food and nutrient requirements for the whole population for any particular year within a perspective plan. Such a quantitative projection can then be used as the basis for formulating a long-range food policy for Nigeria, including a programme of actions to resolve the main bottlenecks and thus to ensure food security.
