Abstract:Kenneth Kaunda has been an eloquent spokesman for the promise of African humanism. This comment provides an addendum to and amplification of Kaunda's view of both the promise of an Afro-centric humanism and the contrast to that vision provided by the ideology, policies and practices of apartheid contained in 'Humanism and apartheid', a speech delivered by the former Zambian President at St. Louis University, USA, in October 1992. To those who are cynical, Kaunda's quest for the spirit of African humanism may seem almost quixotic when viewed against the background of apartheid South Africa. Although apartheid is now officially repudiated in South Africa, good race and ethnic relations do not simply happen. Efforts to create a climate for good race relations will require dynamic leadership, group and individual commitment at all levels of social process, and an unshakable faith in the vision of an African humanism informed by the most comprehensive human rights agenda. The author first looks at the role of institutions of legal culture, intellectuals, professionals and institutions of higher education in developing African humanistic values. Then he examines the contending perspectives of identity underlying African humanism and apartheid: universalism versus chauvinism, parochialism versus cosmopolitanism, inclusive versus exclusive identities, and national versus international identities.
