Abstract:The 1992 drought in Malawi is likely to go down in history as the drought of the century in the country. There have been years of similarly low precipitation, but they did not pass into the annals of horror because they were all preceded by years of exceptionally heavy rainfall. The year 1992 was so bad because rainfall in 1991 and 1990 had already been on the low side. This article examines possible causes of the drought and its effects on crops in general and tea in particular. The situation in 1993 and prospects for 1994 are also dealt with.
