Abstract:This volume examines several dimensions of energy and sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa. The first, introductory unit deals with the general significance of the concept of sustainability for African countries. It is followed by four units focusing on specific energy-related subjects. Unit 2 outlines the path that energy politics in African countries has traditionally taken, examines the opportunities for alternative, i.e. sustainable energy policy options on a national level, and presents a new comprehensive energy policy framework for Africa. Unit 3 deals with the different modalities of international energy cooperation and the crucial question of how international support can successfully promote the transfer of modern and sustainable technologies and energy concepts. In the two following units energy sources and their use in agriculture and in households are scrutinized with regard to existing potentials for a transition towards sustainable energy systems. Unit 4 considers rural energy issues and agroforestry programmes. An examination focusing on households and the role of women and their energy sources for private households is presented in unit 5. Units 6 and 7 contain up-to-date information about ongoing events and news from sub-Saharan African countries as well as book reviews and notes. Bibliogr.
