Abstract: | An analysis of data obtained through a questionnaire survey of 146 enterprises in the auto repair industry in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, in 1988, shows the importance of human capital variables in explaining variations in the earnings of urban informal workers. Labour market experience was found to contribute most, followed by quality of training, age and education. This implies that other variables - type of enterprise, marital status, hours worked and number of apprentices - contributed very little to the determination of workers' earnings. Based on these findings, the author argues that policy measures designed to improve human capital formation in the auto repair industry will have a positive effect on the earnings of operators.
