Abstract: | Dodoma was one of nine growth centres selected during the Second Five Year Plan of Tanzania (1969-1974) to bring development to the 'empty' centre of the country. In 1973 it was designated as the country's new capital city. A quarter of a century has since passed, yet Dodoma has not become the major administrative and industrial hub that was envisaged. Based on fieldwork in Dodoma in September 1988, the author describes the industries operating in the town and discusses the efforts of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) of Dodoma to provide the necessary infrastructure for industrial development. He highlights the physical, economic, and market constraints facing industrial development, the intractable problems of management and foreign exchange, the slow progress in effecting the transfer of the capital from Dar es Salaam, and the lack of promotional programmes for industrialization, and concludes that Dodoma's prospects for large-scale industrialization are virtually nonexistent.
