Abstract: | If the body-mind dualism is seen as an integral part of the concept of basic education then sport, especially in the form of physical education, is indispensable. This paper analyses the problems of sport and physical education in Kenya's educational institutions as they relate to the Inspectorate for Physical Education in the Ministry of Education, the physical education syllabus, the training and education of physical education teachers, and the reality of physical education in schools. The basic problem is that physical education plays a marginal role in school life. This situation is reinforced by the fact that the Inspectorate plays a subordinate role in the Ministry, the physical education syllabus is inadequate, too few teachers are being trained, and the subject lacks prestige. In consequence, the Inspectorate does not promote, supervise and control physical education sufficiently, there are too many discrepancies between the stated aims of the syllabus and the reality, too few teachers identify with physical education, and too many pupils take part in physical education unwillingly. If the physical education component of basic education in Kenya is to be developed, then its prestige and status as a subject must be raised. Bibliogr., notes, sum. |
