Abstract:This paper discusses the role of lay members of the public in the administration of justice in Tanzania. It identifies four categories of lay members in terms of their description in legislation, viz. assessors in subordinate courts and the High Court, honorary magistrates, members of the Economic Crimes Court, and members of the Special Constitutional Court. The author argues that all courts which exercise original jurisdiction should sit with assessors, and that their role in these courts should be advisory. Ref.
