Abstract:This paper presents indicators for and causes of rural poverty in Malawi. Indicators for poverty include the low average height of Malawians, the high rate of infant mortality, and a low life expectancy. Causes of rural poverty in Malâwi include a lack of land available for smallholders, a climate permitting only one single growing season each year, and the lack of access of Malawian households to cash crops. In conclusion, five actions to ameliorate the situation are suggested: 1) stop the alienation of communal land to estates; 2) open up the burley market to large numbers of smallholders; 3) put more effort into initiatives to improve soil fertility; 4) improve the quality of the diet of small children by using a locally adapted soya bean to provide a highly concentrated food; and 5) intensify programmes of all kinds aimed at slowing the rate of population growth.
