Abstract:The School of Law of the University of Zambia had its first intake of students in March 1967. Its objectives are to contribute to the development of the legal system of Zambia, to produce lawyers of a quality at least as good as the best from abroad, and better fitted to meeting the needs of a developing country, and to offer, where desired and required, law teaching facilities in other disciplines in the university and in other institutions in Zambia. Its primary commitment at present is the bachelor of laws programme. A review of the entry requirements to the School's LLB programme and the course structure reveals that there has been a streamlining of courses over the years. Courses considered essential to the training of a lawyer in a common law system have been packaged into one curriculum. The fourth year is presently the growing edge of the curriculum because students are then able to choose courses of personal interest. Concerns remain, however. On the whole, the system is rigid. The introduction of a semester system, plus better staffing, could offer more flexibility.
