Abstract:What are the determinants of the service and operating characteristics of trucking firms in Nigeria, in particular, do the size and location of trucking firms influence their operating characteristics? In order to answer this question the author conducted a questionnaire survey of a sample of 162 trucking firms located in four cities - Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano and Kaduna. He gathered information on the size indicators of firms, such as fleet size and composition, staff strength, number of branch offices, land area occupied, and the presence or otherwise of vehicle maintenance facilities, and on the service structure of firms, such as load and haul characteristics and freight mix. He found that there are significant relationships between some of the size and location variables, notably the range of transport-related services provided, the number of lorries owned, and the distance of a firm to the (nearest) industrial estate, and operating characteristics. In general, however, there was a weak relationship between the operational characteristics of haulage firms, taken as a set, and their size and location, also taken as a set. This may be attributable to the regulation-free environment under which Nigerian hauliers operate, which allows them to combine haulage with other business. Bibliogr., sum.
