Abstract:Political parties are a new phenomenon in Ethiopia and their history is closely linked with socieconomic changes, the emergence of various classes, interest groups, and associations, and a wide political awakening. The overthrow of the Ancien Regime in 1974 was the culmination of the challenges of these forces over a long period. First, this paper surveys revolutionary traditions and the activities and achievements of the new political forces that challenged the autocracy. Next, it describes the various political parties, the political and historical setting in which they emerged and operated, and their role in the Ethiopian revolution. The following parties are described: Ethiopian National Liberation Front (EBNAG), Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Party (EHAPA), All Ethiopian Socialist Movement (ME'ISON), Ethiopian Oppressed Peoples Struggle (ECHAT), Ethiopian Marxist-Leninist Organization (MALRED), WOZ League, Abiyotawi Seded (Revolutionary Flame), EMALEDEH (The United Front of Ethiopian Marxist-Leninist Organization), Ethiopian Communist Party (ECOPA), Ethiopian Democratic Union (EHEDEH), Ethiopian Peoples Democratic Alliance (EHEDEA), Ethiopian Peoples Democratic Revolutionary Party, Kittet Ethiopia, Ethiopia Peoples Democratic Movement (EHEDN), Marxist Leninist League of Tigray, and Workers Party of Ethiopia.
