Abstract: | The authors carried out a questionnaire survey among the students of a Catholic Major Seminary in Nigeria with the aim of investigating the students' views on a number of issues related to priesthood, and inquiring into the psychosocial problems they were encountering and how they were coping with these problems. Out of a total population of 400, 243 (193 juniors and 50 seniors) returned completed questionnaires. The questionnaire had 48 items, divided into eight sections, viz. sociodemographic characteristics, vocation, problems encountered (physical, social, emotional, spiritual), adjustment to celibacy, coping with feelings of inadequacy and other frustrating life experiences, attitudes to the school authorities, health status, and stresses experienced. The data indicate that the respondents were well adjusted to their circumstances of life. This leads the authors to the conclusion that the students in this community seem to have benefitted from the positive aspects of religious living. Bibliogr., sum. in English and French. |
