Abstract:Although available empirical evidence indicates that investments in irrigation projects in Nigeria have not been profitable, the results of the present study of 100 small-scale vegetable growers in the Lake Alau Irrigation Scheme in Borno State suggest otherwise. Based on budgetary and production function analyses of data collected in 1988 by means of structured questionnaires, the authors conclude that irrigated vegetable production under the Lake Alau scheme was privately and socially profitable, and that there were increasing returns to scale. They therefore suggest that small-scale irrigation schemes used for short-growing and high-valued food crops such as vegetables should be encouraged in Nigeria. Other findings of the study were that 96 percent of the growers were young and middle-aged farmers, whose literacy rate was as high as 80 percent. App., bibliogr., sum.
