| Abstract: | This essay is concerned with the diversification and intensification programmes of the Gezira Board in Sudan during the 1960s. Intensification and diversification were attempts to increase the amount of produce actually grown within the Gezira, as well as an attempt to broaden the variety of crops produced there. In particular, these programmes concentrated upon wheat as an import substitute, and peanuts as an additional export crop. Although the goals of intensification and diversification seemed reasonable, the programme was ultimately a failure. An overview of development policy in the Gezira during the period 1960-1967 shows that the reasons for this failure included the unstable political situation, inexperience among tenants in international marketing, and the inertia brought about by the Gezira's organization.
