Title:Attempt at innovative teaching strategies such as small-group instruction in primary schools in Chiduku area of Makoni District: problems and possible solutions

Abstract:In 1992 the author carried out a study to investigate the attitudes of primary school teachers in Chiduku area, Makoni District, Zimbabwe, towards group work and group teaching, and the major constraints on the use of group work in rural schools. The study revealed that, although many teachers were aware of the educational significance of group teaching and group work, they were reluctant to adopt it in large classes with limited space and inadequate learning resource materials. The findings indicated that most of the teachers had no knowledge of implementing group teaching in large classes. The study also revealed that group teaching was used only as a follow-up activity after teaching the entire class; a variety of group activities was nonexistent; adequate resources were not available to make learning aids for group activities; rotation of group activities was not practised; classroom furniture was barely adequate for all children in the class; traditional seating arrangements in rows did not give freedom to children to move freely within the classroom; not all classrooms had display boards; teaching records were not regularly kept and the teachers in upper primary classes made extensive use of tests to chart pupils' progress throughout the year; and qualitative assessment was nonexistent.
