Abstract: | This book gives an account of the political history of Sudan from the beginning of Turko-Egyptian rule in 1821 until 1969, when President Nimeiri came to power. The book is written from the viewpoint of a Southerner in exile. It deals with the land and people of Sudan, early external contacts (slave trade, the mission), colonial rule in Southern Sudan (c. 1900-1947), the process of independence (c. 1948-1956), Southern Sudan after independence, and the future of Islamic rule in Sudan. |
